Ayeridia Heliyon

Princess Ayeridia Heliyon was my character from the first D&D campaign I played in. I used it as an opportunity to practice my art skills since I was never very good at doing character drawings.

Ayeridia (Ayer) was a princess from a fallen draconic kingdom who was trying to slowly regain power and allies to rebuild her lost nation. Mechanically, she was a lawful evil brass dragonborn vengeance paladin, but I wrote her lineage as half brass, quarter blue, quarter white which gave her the more golden scale color and the light blue coloring on her head. I designed her overall look to feel more warrior-esque than her royal background would suggest and used the star / sun symbology of her nation's crest to make her feel somewhat like Captain America with the level of nationalist iconography in her equipment. I also wanted her armor to look somewhat incomplete and well-worn but still taken care of since she had been maintaining the same set for a few decades since her kingdom's demise. Stardate 17619.5

The initial character art I did took me a whole week of free time to make since I had basically no experience drawing characters. Having to figure out anatomy shapes on top of struggling to draw a dragon head was very challenging. I really like how it came out though at the end. I was very annoyed at having to draw every bit of scale texture but it improved the overall quality so much. I was also very pleased with how I translated the traced dragon head I used into my own style. Stardate 17619.5

There was a particularly awesome fight that happened early in the campaign where all of our party members had a cool or fun moment so I started making an animatic in the same style as SAD-ist's Dream SMP animatics. I had partially underestimated the amount of work it required and also overestimated my own competence at quickly drawing the characters so I stopped after making this short 'teaser' of it. I hope to revisit it at some point because I think it would be a really cool project to finish. Stardate 17723.2

This was my first attempt at a painted style piece, I am super happy with how it came out. The lighter line-art and heavier emphasis on shading and lighting was fun to figure out. I also had to use this opportunity to clarify to my friends that she does have a layer of clothing on under her armor that wasn't visible from the angle of her initial character art. This was also where I retconned in her tail. Stardate 17723.2

At the end of the same battle which I was making the animatic out of there was a moment where Ayer revealed her elemental ability to gain temporary fire immunity and so our sorcerer hurled two upcasted fireballs at the final boss while Ayer distracted him and his goons. Turned out that he also had a bit of fire resistance so the two just aura farmed each other while all the goons got vaporized, which spawned the inspiration for this image. Stardate 17699.0

After Ayer had her armor damaged by an ooze, she re-forged and enchanted it and got a new weapon called the Sunspear. Her passive AC ended up at 25 or something absurd, and she only saw combat twice more before I ended up leaving the campaign. The facemask I added was partly inspired by Ambessa's faceplate from Arcane, since her character was rough inspiration for Ayer's personality as being generally tactical and wrathful (hence her nickname being pronounced the same as the word 'ire').
